WEC to have $400,000 prize pool for CS2
The International Esports Federation (IESF) has announced that the 2024 World Esports Championship will include two CS2 tournaments with a total prize pool of $400,000 USD. The Open tournament will feature 24 teams and a $240,000 prize pool, while the Women’s event will have 16 teams competing for $160,000 in prize money.
CS2 is one of five games that will be played at the 16th World eSports Championship later this year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (exact dates have not yet been announced). The event will feature a record $1 million prize pool across all competitions.
The host country announcement was made in September 2023, just months after Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud, a member of the Saudi royal family and president of the Saudi eSports Federation, became the IESF’s statutory vice president.
The road to the World eSports Championships will begin with national qualifiers, followed by regional qualifiers. The allocation of slots for each region is as follows:
Europe – 12 Open slots and 7 Women’s slots
South/North America – 4 Open slots and 3 Women’s slots
Asia – 6 Open slots and 4 Women’s slots
African Union – 2 Open and 2 Women’s slots
Following the regional qualifiers, 24 Open teams and 16 Women’s teams will travel to Riyadh for the main event, where round-robin group play will lead into the single-elimination stage. For more information on the tournament format, the IESF has posted this video.
The top eight teams in each category will receive a share of the prize pool, with the Open winner walking away with $100,000 and the Women’s winner with $50,000.
