FURIA defeat BIG to seal top-16 stage spot in Shangha

FalleN has finally ended a seven-year losing streak against tabseN’s teams.

FalleN gets his first career win over BIG

FURIA have secured a spot in the Elimination Stage of the Perfect World Shanghai Major with a 2-1 victory over BIG. The Brazilians recovered from a terrible showing on their map pick of Nuke and, after nearly letting a 10-2 lead slip on Mirage in comical fashion, completed the reverse sweep with a masterclass of a Dust2 performance.

The win has a personal element to it as it snaps Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo’s ten-match losing streak against Johannes “tabseN” Wodarz. The last time the Brazilian veteran had bested his rival dated back to 2016, when the German was plying his trade for NRG.

After the 1-1 pool victory over Wildcard, FalleN confessed that his team had not “been able to play very convincingly” in Shanghai. FURIA’s struggles carried over into the first map of this series, where they were run over by their opponents in a one-sided affair.

The Brazilians showed a different attitude coming out of Mirage and cruised to a 10-2 lead on the CT side, with FalleN rolling back the years with a stunning 4K early in the half. Things got a bit hectic in the second half as Jon “JDC” de Castro kept the game going with back-to-back plant denials, but FURIA managed to put it away just when overtime seemed inevitable.

Dust2 followed the same pattern as the previous map as FURIA built a commanding 9-3 lead after a T-side masterclass. Yuri “yuurih” Santos then made sure that there would be no comeback with a beautiful 4K on A in the pistol round, setting his team up for a quick 4-0 run.
