skullz on 1v4: “I don’t know if, in the back of my mind, I had the donk highlight”

FURIA nearly pulled off an incredible comeback from 2-12 down.

FURIA had a solid Major campaign in Shanghai, one which they began with a comfortable upset victory against Spirit in the first round. The rest of their results were much more up-and-down, eventually leading to a matchup against FaZe in the 2-2 pool.

The Brazilian squad then found themselves 2-12 down on the decider, but Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo’s troops didn’t give up. Their comeback attempt was filled with individual moments, with Felipe “skullz” Medeiros’s 1v4 clutch being the cream of the crop.

Despite not completing the comeback, skullz is satisfied with FURIA’s performance. “I am really happy with the result even though we didn’t manage to reach the playoffs,” he began.

“…some things just need more time. I know it’s pretty cliche to say that, but it’s the only way we’re going to get better.”

Commiserations, a heartbreaking end to the Major run for you. You almost made the comeback on Mirage. How are you feeling after that?

I’m feeling really sad, and a little bit upset because I really wanted this playoffs. Everyone in the team is feeling the same because we worked pretty hard for this, and unfortunately it didn’t come.

But we’re moving in the right direction so we should keep our heads up and… just be excited for the next season because we are accomplishing something very special with this lineup.

It was a really rough first half first half for you, and even the start of the second half. Part of what kickstarted this comeback was this 1v4 from you, what was going through your mind at that moment?

Honestly, I don’t know if like, in the back of my mind, I had the donk highlight, but the guys were joking after that that I was the Brazilian donk. At that moment I was focused on my game and still believing in every moment, so I was just killing and shooting and the round came our way.

For you to come to this Major with FURIA, come this close, but not quite make it over the line in the end, what was the experience like?

For me it’s a very positive overall tournament for us. We played really well throughout the tournament, we beat pretty solid teams, and we were really close to beating other top-tier teams.

I am really happy with the result even though we didn’t manage to reach the playoffs. As I said, I think we are building something really special with this lineup, so some things just need more time. I know it’s pretty cliche to say that, but it’s the only way we’re going to get better.

In Rio you told Dust2 Brazil that the team was still getting experience playing in front of a crowd, FalleN said something similar to me. FalleN obviously has a lot of stage experience, some players on the team have some as well. What was it like playing here in front of the crowd and getting more of that experience?

It was awesome. Since the beginning of the tournament there was a crowd everywhere, and this builds a lot of experience for everyone. I’m the least experienced guy in the arena so it’s just good to get these matches every day in the arena, get more and more comfortable, that’s a really nice experience for me.

I’m just glad to be around people that are loving and supportive

Lastly, I remember when I was at the RMR for Copenhagen and I saw how sad you were when you missed out on the Major. To see you play here now and still be… I mean, you’re sad, but you seem like you enjoyed the run at least.

Yeah. If someone told me I was going to end the year like this, feeling the feelings I am at the moment, I would probably not believe that because at that time I was in a very dark spot. I’m just glad that I’m here with the guys, with everyone from FURIA, the staff, the coaches, everything. They’re amazing people and I love to be with them, so I’m just glad to be around people that are loving and supportive.
